The Perfect Gift

“And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up…” (Deut. 6:7).

One of the best gifts a parent can give their children is the gift of a Godly heritage. There is no amount of money which can compare to the great value and worth found in teaching them about the principles of God’s Kingdom. The material things we purchase for them are fleeting and can be replaced with something of similar value; however, the principles of the Kingdom are timeless and are treasures which can be applied to their lives throughout their entire time spent here on earth. They guide them through difficult times. They guide them through difficult decision-making. They teach them how to relate to God, to others, and also themselves. Their identity is found within the principles from beginning to end. These are treasures which will be stored up for the years to come and can never be taken from them.

So although it is nice to give our children some of the things they desire, it is more beneficial to give them access to the things of which they have need.

  1. Each child deserves to know about the Good Shepherd who watches over him or her, and how to imagine that happening in real life–even though everything doesn’t go the way we’d like it to go. From my perspective, communicating the Gospel to children is one of the most challenging callings we could have. Especially with our own children. Good post, Sean!
